Bernice's Bakery Celebrates 30th Birthday with Twelve Months of Giving!

A daily breakfast and coffee
mainstay for many Missoulians, Bernice's has evolved and grown over the
last thirty years. She's been through three ownership changes, one
large expansion, hundreds of bakers, and still remains grounded in her
home at 190 South Third Street West. For many, she's been our
first job, our first dream, a landing pad between here and there, the
place we fell in love and a mirror of whom we've become as a community
of people. In celebration of Bernice's vital role in Missoula's
community, current owners Christine and Marco Littig have taken on an
ambitious strategy of giving back to the community that has supported
Bernice's growth and kept her healthy.
Each month Bernice's will be creating partnerships with
chosen non-profits in an endeavor to generate cash donations.
Bernice's has always gifted Missoula the way she knows best: with cakes,
cookies, breads, breakfast pastries, and bold coffee. Bernice's
historically gives between ten and thirteen thousand dollars per year of
baked goods as in-kind donations to a broad spectrum of organizations in
Montana seeking support. While proud to help in multiple
fund-raising efforts this way, the Littigs have wanted to give more
cash, specifically, to the organizations that have been born in Missoula
and strive to promote the sustainability and health of the city.
These partnerships will be focused marketing and sales
campaigns spearheaded by Bernice's Bakery and are targeted to raise
awareness and garner support for the particular organization of the
month. For instance, the largest over-arching project Bernice's is
completing for the celebration is a 2008 day planner entitled "Thirty
Years of Baking Goodness." The day planner will express, with
photos and words, the past 30 years of community life in Missoula
through Bernice's eyes. "We see the day planner as a tangible
expression of sustainability. Pulling together the pieces and
compiling the history from so many memories and stories shared by
long-time customers and past employees has been an awesome endeavor,"
says Christine. "Understanding the continuity between our past and
present allows us to make better choices in the future," says Marco.
After covering costs, all money collected from the sale of
these day planners will be directly donated to Garden City Harvest and
the PEAS program: an estimated $12,000.00. Both Garden City
Harvest and PEAS have been long time advocates for sustainble farming
and promoting sustainable economies.
