Bernice’s Blend
A Better Cup of Coffee…
Hunter Bay’s version of a classic Mocha Java, Bernice’s Blend, is rich in flavors of wild berries and spice, with an earthiness that lends robust body and structure. Mocha Java is the world’s oldest known coffee blend, and in our version, quality coffee beans from Africa and Indonesia are carefully blended and roasted to achieve a perfect marriage between the dancing fruit accents of the African and the thick earth tones of the Indonesian coffees. Bernice’s Blend is made from naturally processed, 100% organic coffees from coffee cooperatives in the East Indies and Africa. In this complex blend, the robust body and smooth finish of the East Indies coffees work to balance the assertive fruity flavors in the East African coffees, presenting the best qualities of each in a stout brew of moderate acidity, with full flavors and ripe berry highlights. Our coffee is rich, winey, and full bodied. Try a cup – you may never be satisfied with a regular cup of coffee again!
Roasting Notes:
Type: Medium Roast: Bernice’s Blend is slow roasted to a rich, dark chocolate brown Viennese Roast, to accentuate the coffee’s caramel-chocolate flavors, and to add a touch of Dark Roast toastiness ans pleasant burnt-sugar sweetness to this well balanced, full bodied brew.

- Body – Thick, bold, and supple, with lasting full-bodied flavor.

Brewed Strong, Smart, and Fresh for our Customers’ Pleasure
- Hunter Bay Coffee Roasters roasts our coffee locally, in small batches, delivering it to us three times a week. Bernice’s Blend was jointly developed, specifically to compliment our gourmet pastries and cakes.
- We use filtered water and twice the average amount of grounds to make every pot. No corners are cut, so you get the finest possible cup of coffee, every time.
- Our coffee is brewed using a state of the art brewer, called an Extractor. The extractor saturates the grounds with hot water, then pauses for just over a minute to allow the grounds to expand. The extractor then completes the brewing process by pushing hot water through the grounds, efficiently extracting the maximum flavor with minimal bitterness.
- The coffee goes straight from the extractor into 3 liter airpots, and is promptly served.
…From the Grounds Up
We pay to compost all of our Coffee grounds. The Missoula Urban Demonstration Project sends volunteers out on bicycles to pick up our used grounds once a week, as part of their “Coffee to Compost” program. Our composted Coffee grounds, along with all of the egg shells we amass are then deposited at the Northside Community Gardens where they are mixed with leaves and grass clippings from St Mary’s Cemetary. Garden City Harvest manages this garden, providing compost to more than 55 garden plots. Many of these plots are “Food Aid” plots that provide, Fresh, Locally Grown, Organic produce to The Poverello Center, The Joseph Residence, the YWCA, and the Battered Women’s Shelter, here in Missoula.
